Journalism : Department Profile
Mr. Rahul P. Chaudhari, Assistant Professor, and HOD,Journalism and Mass Communication

Media is the reflection of our society and it depicts what and how society works. Media, either it is print, electronic or the web is the only medium, which helps in making people informed, entertained and spread awareness in different manners. A society’s evolution is greatly influenced by the media on a national and international level.

In the M&E business, there is a demand for highly educated, multitasking workforce. The knowledge gap between industry and academia will be filled by skill-oriented education. The Department of Media and Communication Studies was founded to give students multiple perspectives on social as well as communication platforms. Our department’s strength is its skill-based curriculum. This curriculum will definitely transform the academic and media landscape. On June 15, 2014, the Department of Media and Communication Studies of the University Grant Commission approved the extension of the programme under the National Service Qualification Framework (NSQF). In the academic year 2019–20, the Department of Media and Communication Studies launched the PG programme within the NSQF framework. On July 26, 2019, UGC released a list of colleges that had been authorized. The M.Voc-Media Studies programme at the college has begun on the same day, on July 26, 2019.

Established in June 2014 under the National Skill Qualification Framework, the Department of Media and Communication Studies was formerly known as the Journalism and Mass Communication Department. University Grant Commission, New Delhi, provides funding for B.Voc. Journalism and Mass Communication programmes. In the academic year 2014–2015, Savitribai Phule University, Pune, is affiliated with the B.Voc. Journalism and Mass Communication programme. According to NSQF guidelines, the department offers skill-based education with a 60% emphasis on skill development and a 40% emphasis on general education. The department relocated to the vocational centre building in the 2016–17 academic year. 50 students are accepted each year into the three-year B.Voc course. The post-graduation Master in Vocational – Media Studies programme, often known as M.Voc -Media Studies, was introduced by the college for the 2019–20 academic years. The curriculum has four semesters. In the third and fourth semesters, there are two specializations available: video production and digital journalism. The infrastructure in the department of media and communication studies is top-notch. The department’s acoustic television studio is named for Late. Dadasaheb Phalke, a pioneer of the Indian cinema industry. The department also features video editing labs and a dubbing studio.
